Leather Materials
PU leatherette is a synthetic material built from a fabric base coated with a polyurethane surface layer. The surface can be embossed with different grain patterns—smooth, pebbled, cross-grain, or Morocco—to replicate the look and feel of genuine leather. The result is a cover material that folds cleanly around grayboard, bonds reliably with adhesive, and accepts foil stamping and debossing with sharp, consistent results.
We stock PU leatherette in multiple grain styles and a wide selection of colors. Because it is manufactured to uniform thickness and color, every cover in a print run matches—something genuine leather cannot guarantee.

Printing and Finishing on Leatherette
- Foil stamping: gold, silver, rose gold, copper, and other Minimum line weight 0.3 mm; avoid body text below 6 pt. Keep foil at least 6–8 mm from cover edges and 8–12 mm clear of the spine hinge. The most popular finishing method for leatherette.
- Blind debossing: the die presses into the leatherette surface without foil or ink. On smooth PU, the debossed area appears slightly darker, creating a subtle tonal shift. Best with bold shapes and logos; typical impression depth is 0.3–0.6 mm.
- Foil-stamped debossing: combines debossing and foil in a single pass. Produces a dimensional metallic impression that is the premium standard for leather-bound books and luxury packaging.
- Screen printing: opaque ink applied directly to the leatherette surface. Best for bold logos, solid graphics, and flat-color designs on smooth or fine-grain surfaces. Use vector artwork; keep text at 5 pt or above.
Embossing is not recommended. The flexible PU surface does not hold a raised impression effectively. Use debossing instead.
Registration tolerance for foil and debossing on leatherette is ±0.5–1.0 mm. Allow clearance near board edges and corner radius areas. Dye lots may vary slightly; swatches and production runs can differ.
How to Choose the Right Leatherette
Grain style: smooth leatherette gives a clean, modern look and produces the sharpest foil stamping results. Fine-grain (micro-grain) leatherette has a softer hand feel with subtle texture. Morocco grain and pebble grain create a more traditional leather appearance with deeper surface relief, but very fine foil details may not transfer as crisply on the deeper texture.
Color: dark leatherettes (black, brown, navy) paired with metallic foil produce a classic, high-contrast result. Lighter colors (tan, cream, gray) work well for contemporary designs and allow screen-printed artwork to read clearly.
Finishing compatibility: smooth and fine-grain surfaces accept all finishing techniques well. Morocco and pebble-grain surfaces are best suited for foil stamping and blind debossing with bold graphics—avoid fine serif text or hairline details on deeply textured surfaces. Screen printing works best on smooth leatherette; on heavily textured surfaces, ink may not fill the grain evenly.
Leatherette vs. Book Cloth
Both leatherette and book cloth wrap onto grayboard and accept foil stamping and debossing. The choice between them depends on the aesthetic you want and the product you are making.
| PU Leatherette | Book Cloth | |
|---|---|---|
| Look and feel | Smooth or grained surface that replicates leather. Cool to the touch, polished, and uniform. | Visible woven texture. Warm to the touch with a handcrafted, organic quality. |
| Finishing | Excellent for foil stamping and debossing. Screen printing works well on smooth surfaces. | Excellent for foil stamping, debossing, screen printing, and digital inkjet printing. |
| Durability | Very high. Resists moisture, stains, and surface scratches. Easy to wipe clean. | High. Resists scuffing, but more susceptible to moisture and staining than leatherette. |
| Perceived value | Premium. Associated with leather goods, executive products, and traditional publishing. | Premium. Associated with craftsmanship, artisan publishing, and understated elegance. |
| Best for | Bibles, journals, planners, executive notebooks, luxury rigid boxes, menu covers. | Special editions, coffee table books, journals, planners, slipcases, literary fiction, portfolios. |
| Substrate compatibility | Leatherette can be wrapped onto grayboard as well as laminated onto heavier endsheet paper, offering more versatility in case construction. | Cloth can only be wrapped onto grayboard. It cannot be laminated directly onto endsheets. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Is your leatherette animal-free?
Yes. Our leatherette is PU-based (polyurethane) and 100% animal-free. It is sometimes called faux leather or vegan leather.
Can I print full-color images on leatherette?
Leatherette is not ideal for full-color image printing. Foil stamping, debossing, and screen printing are the recommended finishing methods. For covers that require photographic artwork, a printed paper wrap or a paper inlay within a debossed leatherette cover is a better approach.
Can I customize the leatherette color?
No. Leatherette is stocked in fixed colors and grain styles. Choose from the options in our material library.
Are samples available?
Yes. We provide leatherette swatch samples on your request. However, you need to pay the leatherette sample fees and shipping fees.
How does pricing compare to book cloth?
Pricing is similar. The exact cost depends on the grain style, size, finishing options, and order quantity. Visit our leather bound book printing page for online pricing, or contact us for a custom quote.
Does leatherette work for rigid boxes, not only books?
Yes. Leatherette wraps onto any rigid board product—rigid boxes, telescope boxes, drawer boxes, and presentation cases.
