Who Uses Foil Stamping on Books?

Custom Sizes

Self-Published Authors and Indie Publishers

Gold or rose gold foil on the title and author name lifts a self-published novel from generic to professional. We work with authors of romance, fantasy, romantasy, mystery and literary fiction, plus indie publishers managing growing backlists. Typical setup: softcover or hardcover with foil title on cover and spine.

Independent-Designers-icon

Kickstarter and Crowdfunding Creators

Foil-stamped covers are a standard reward tier for crowdfunding book projects, especially collector and limited editions. We support tier-based production, pre-production samples for campaign photos, and fulfillment coordination. As an official Kickstarter Partner Directory supplier, we have produced foil-stamped books for thousands of funded campaigns.

Brand-Activations--icon

Artists, Illustrators and Photographers

For art books, illustration portfolios, photography books and coffee table books, we apply foil to cloth and paper covers to deliver the gallery-quality feel artists expect. Foil can also be added to interior chapter dividers and decorative elements.

Lay-Flat Binding for Active Use

Religious Publishers

Bible, prayer book and hymnal publishers commonly request gold or silver foil on the cover and spine, paired with leather or cloth covers. We support bilingual and multilingual editions from 100 to 50,000 copies.

Sellers-icon

Businesses and Organizations

Corporate anniversary books, brand books, annual reports and client gift books use foil to display the company logo. Most common configuration: hardcover with cloth case, gold or silver foil logo, matching foil on the dust jacket.

How We Make Custom Foil Stamping Books

Step 1: We produce a custom foil stamping mold.

Step 2: We place the mold and heat the foil stamping machine to around 120°C — which gives it the name heat foil stamping.

Step 3: The foil material and printed paper imprint through the mold.

Step 4: The foil material goes through the mold and adheres to the paper.

Once the foil stamping process is complete, we move on to the next step of binding.

Foil Stamping Maximum Size

In most cases, the maximum foil stamping mold size is 12 x 12 inches, meaning the maximum area for one instance of foil stamping is 12″ x 12″. This size typically allows us to cover the front cover, spine, and back cover all at once for a seamless design. If the target area is larger than 12″ x 12″, the foil stamping can be done multiple times to cover the full area for a cohesive finish.

Large Size Foil Stamping

Common Coffee Table Book Sizes

A coffee table book is an oversized hardcover bound book. Coffee table books are designed for presentation. They should impress, intrigue, and catch the eye. While the exact dimensions depend on your content, how many photographs and illustrations you include, and the layout and orientation, most coffee table books are large, printed on premium art paper, and bound in hardcovers. A landscape-oriented collection of black-and-white or full-color art photography may be larger than an anthology of your verse; and a memoir, family history, or travelogue may better suit a large portrait format. Here’s a handy coffee table book size chart. Explore the possibilities to help you to decide which size would best suit your project.

Common Coffee Table Book Sizes
Square Sizes 8" x 8" 8.5" x 8.5" 9" x 9" 10" x 10" 10.5" x 10.5" 11" x 11" 12" x 12"

Smaller sizes—even down to 6″ x 9″ are convenient if you need to enhance a more intimate interior or ‘top off’ an elegant stack of grander volumes. Larger sizes make a stronger impression. But you’re not limited to the suggestions above. At QinPrinting, we specialize in custom coffee table book printing in any size or format you wish. Only remember that extensive customization incurs higher costs and slower turnaround times because there’s more pre-press and setup involved. But for your dream project, or as part of an overall interior décor renovation, the added investment could be worthwhile. It’s always your decision.

FAQs

No! Foil stamping is very affordable in China with QinPrinting’s offset printing. Adding a foil stamp to the cover typically costs less than $1 extra per book.

For example, if you are printing 100 copies of a 64-page 8.5″ × 11″ paperback, the cost is $546. If you add one-place foil stamping, the cost increases to $576 — just a $30 difference. That means the foil stamping adds only $0.30 per book!

You can always check our online calculator to compare prices and see if it is suitable for your project.

We stock 30+ foil colors in four main categories. Metallic foils include classic gold, reddish gold, matte orange, rose gold, silver and matte silver. Solid foils include white, black, red, rose red, light purple, deep purple, cyan blue, dark blue and green. Pearlescent and holographic foils include rainbow holographic, kaleidoscope holographic, debris holographic, bronze holographic and small-grid gold holographic. Other foil colors can be chosen on request.

Gold foil is the classic luxury choice, used for traditional editions, religious books, and high-end gift books. Rose gold foil has a warm pink-gold tone and is popular for journals, women’s books and romance novels. Holographic foil reflects rainbow colors and is currently very popular for collector editions, comic books and special editions targeting younger readers.

Our minimum order quantity is 100 books with foil stamping, regardless of whether you choose softcover or hardcover. This is the same MOQ as our standard book printing, which makes foil stamping accessible to self-published authors and small presses, not just large publishers.

Yes. Beyond the front cover, we routinely foil the spine, back cover, dust jacket, slipcase, belly band, and interior elements such as chapter dividers and end papers. Multiple foil applications add to the per-book cost but create the layered premium feel that collector and limited editions are known for.

Production for a foil stamped book is typically 6 to 15 working days from approval of digital proofs, depending on the binding, paper and quantity. Sea shipping to the US, Canada, UK, EU or Australia typically takes 4 to 8 weeks depending on route and season. For tighter deadlines we can expedite production or arrange air freight; contact us for time-critical projects.

Yes, these are among our most popular combinations. Cloth with gold or silver foil is the classic look for art books and high-end novels. Leather with gold foil is standard for Bibles and corporate anniversary editions. PU leather with foil offers a similar premium feel at lower cost, popular for journals and collector books. Matte and metallic foils work well on cloth and leather; holographic foils sit better on smooth coated paper.

Foil stamping is one of the defining features of BookTok-style special editions. The aesthetic that drives visibility, dark covers, metallic accents, sprayed edges, character endpapers, almost always includes foil on the title or decorative cover elements. Gold, rose gold, holographic and iridescent foils are especially popular for romantasy, fantasy and romance novels. We typically pair foil with painted edges and a cloth or soft-touch hardcover. MOQ 100 makes a limited BookTok edition realistic without a large commitment.
