Our Cloth Options

Our cloth and linen options cover the full range from classic book cloth to modern synthetic blends. Linen is our most popular choice for its natural textured surface and foil stamping receptivity. Cotton-based canvases offer extra strength for heavy-use titles. Synthetic blends (poly-cotton with acrylic coating) work best for projects with intricate foil designs or busy patterns.

Custom High-Definition Full-Color Printing on Cloth

Traditionally, cloth covers were limited to simple text or logos using foil stamping. But for high-end projects, simple isn’t always enough.

At QinPrinting, we specialize in Direct-to-Cloth Printing. This capability allows us to print intricate designs, photographs, and complex gradients directly onto the fabric cover with a quality that rivals standard paper printing—all while preserving the unique tactile texture of the cloth.

The Ultimate Upgrade for Limited Editions

This option is a game-changer for Limited Edition runs and Deluxe Kickstarter tiers.

In the past, if you wanted a full-color cover image, you had to sacrifice the premium feel of cloth and use a standard paper case. Now, you don’t have to compromise. You can deliver the vivid detail of a printed cover combined with the luxurious, woven touch of linen. This creates a rare, collectible aesthetic that immediately signals “high value” to your readers and collectors.

Inset Cover Image

Creating an inset cover image is a design technique in printing cloth cover books, where an image or photograph is inlaid directly into the fabric of the cover. Unlike traditional methods of merely printing or embossing on the cover, this process allows the image to blend completely with the surface of the cloth, creating a smooth and seamless layout.

Dust Jacket

A dust jacket is the protective paper wrapped around a book’s hard cover. It can be easily taken off to either update or change the cover art. A dust jacket with a cloth cover creates a robust, stylish appearance and is widely preferred among publishers and collectors due to its marketable presentation.

Cloth for Hardcover Book and Slipcase

Cloth covers are predominantly used for hardcover book exteriors, offering a durable and elegant finish that enhances the book’s aesthetic appeal.

Additionally, cloth can be applied to slipcases, providing a unique premium look for special book collections. Whether used on a book itself or its slipcase, cloth covers are both functional and stylish, making them a popular choice for high-quality publications.

Common Coffee Table Book Sizes

A coffee table book is an oversized hardcover bound book. Coffee table books are designed for presentation. They should impress, intrigue, and catch the eye. While the exact dimensions depend on your content, how many photographs and illustrations you include, and the layout and orientation, most coffee table books are large, printed on premium art paper, and bound in hardcovers. A landscape-oriented collection of black-and-white or full-color art photography may be larger than an anthology of your verse; and a memoir, family history, or travelogue may better suit a large portrait format. Here’s a handy coffee table book size chart. Explore the possibilities to help you to decide which size would best suit your project.

Common Coffee Table Book Sizes
Square Sizes 8" x 8" 8.5" x 8.5" 9" x 9" 10" x 10" 10.5" x 10.5" 11" x 11" 12" x 12"

Smaller sizes—even down to 6″ x 9″ are convenient if you need to enhance a more intimate interior or ‘top off’ an elegant stack of grander volumes. Larger sizes make a stronger impression. But you’re not limited to the suggestions above. At QinPrinting, we specialize in custom coffee table book printing in any size or format you wish. Only remember that extensive customization incurs higher costs and slower turnaround times because there’s more pre-press and setup involved. But for your dream project, or as part of an overall interior décor renovation, the added investment could be worthwhile. It’s always your decision.

FAQs

Cloth cover book printing cost depends on 5 factors you’ll need to decide first: trim size, page count, interior paper, cloth type, and print quantity. Rather than a single number, here’s how it scales:

  • For a standard 8.5×11 cloth cover hardcover book with 100 pages on coated interior paper and basic foil stamping, per-copy cost runs from around $2.3/copy at 2,000 copies up to $15/copy at 100 copies.
  • Thicker books, larger sizes, premium cloth (linen vs synthetic), multiple foil colors, or Direct-to-Cloth printing will increase the cost.

Use our instant calculator above — it updates as you adjust cloth, foil, and specs. For exact pricing tailored to your project, talk to a cloth cover specialist. Detailed sample price tables are below for reference.

Both are premium hardcover options, but they suit different projects.

Cloth covers (linen, canvas, synthetic blends) feel lighter and more contemporary. They take foil stamping beautifully and can hold full-color artwork through our Direct-to-Cloth printing process. Cloth works best for modern hardcovers, art books, journals, Kickstarter editions, and any project where you want a clean, refined look without heavy traditional weight.

Leather covers (PU or bonded leather) carry a heavier traditional feel, resist handling wear longer, and develop a distinctive grain texture over time. Leather works best for collector volumes, gift editions, bibles, family heirlooms, and any project where the cover itself signals heritage.

Pricing between cloth and PU leather is comparable for most specifications, so the choice is usually about aesthetics and intended use rather than budget.

See our leather bound book printing page for leather options.

“Linen” and “cloth” are often used interchangeably in book printing. Technically, linen refers specifically to woven flax fiber cloth with a characteristic natural texture, while “book cloth” is a broader term covering linen, cotton canvas, poly-cotton blends, and synthetic weaves. At QinPrinting, our 20+ cloth options include both pure linens and modern blends — the right choice depends on your cover design, foil complexity, and budget. Intricate foil designs stamp cleanest on coated cloth; natural uncoated linens give the most traditional appearance.

We stock foil in gold, silver, rose gold, black, white, red, blue, green, holographic, and more — additional colors available on request. Yes, you can use multiple foil colors on the same cover. Each additional color requires a separate die and stamping pass, which adds to the unit cost. For complex multi-color foil designs on cloth, we recommend talking to our team first — certain color combinations stamp more cleanly on some cloth textures than others, and we can guide you through what works best for your specific cloth and artwork.

Yes — through our Direct-to-Cloth Printing process. We reproduce photographs, gradients, and detailed artwork directly onto the fabric cover, while keeping the cloth’s natural texture intact.

This finish works on light-tone cloth with a fine, smooth weave — natural linen, off-white canvas, and oatmeal fabrics are typical choices. The light base allows accurate color reproduction, and the fine weave keeps the printed image sharp without distortion.

Direct-to-Cloth is priced separately from the standard cloth cover options shown above, as it requires specific material selection and proofing. To get a tailored quote, just contact us.

Especially popular for Limited Edition runs, Deluxe Kickstarter tiers, collectible art books, and photography monographs where you want the premium tactile feel of cloth combined with a full-color cover image.

Please provide high-resolution pdf files (300 ppi) in CMYK color mode with 3-mm bleed.

Yes, we provide both digital and physical proofs. Digital proofs help you review the layout on screen, while physical proofs allow you to check the material, color, and finish before the final printing. Visit our proof support page or contact our team to ask about the options best suited to your needs.

Direct-to-Cloth Full-Color Printing

We’re one of the few printers offering Direct-to-Cloth full-color printing — reproducing photographs, gradients, and complex artwork directly onto cloth covers while preserving the fabric’s natural texture. Most cloth cover printing services are limited to foil stamping, embossing, or debossing on cloth, which works well for logos and typography but can’t carry detailed imagery.

Full-Customization,-Endless-Options

Foil, Emboss, Inset Image, and Gilded Edges — All In-House

8 standard foil colors (gold, silver, white, black, green, red, blue, holographic) with custom colors available. Plus embossing, debossing, spot UV, inset cover images, and gilded or painted edges — all produced in our own facility. No outsourcing, no coordination delays between vendors.

Lay-Flat Binding for Active Use

Smyth-Sewn Hardcover Construction as Standard

Every cloth cover book we produce uses Smyth-sewn binding — signatures are folded, sewn, and cased into a rigid 2.5mm greyboard cover wrapped in your chosen cloth. This is the same construction method used by luxury publishers and fine art book makers.

Factory-Direct-Pricing

Factory-Direct Pricing on Premium Materials

We source cloth, foil, greyboard, and other premium materials directly from specialist suppliers in China at wholesale prices. Our clients typically save 30–40% compared to US and European printers on cloth cover production — with no compromise on material quality.

Offset Paper effect

Offset (Uncoated) Paper
A natural, uncoated paper that provides a smooth, absorbent surface, making it ideal for writing. It offers excellent opacity and brightness, ensuring text is crisp and clear. This paper is commonly used for books that emphasize readability and is often chosen for trade paperback novels, coloring books, etc.

Gilded Edges and Painted Edges

For hardcover books, the edges of the text block can be finished with additional decorative treatments.

  • Gilded edges are created by applying a thin layer of metallic foil—typically gold or silver, though other metallic colors are also available—giving the book a luxurious, polished look.
  • Painted edges are achieved by applying ink directly to the edges. This can be done in solid colors, in gradients, or even with pre-designed patterns or images. Painted edges require a minimum spine width of 10mm and are only available with uncoated offset paper.

  • If your book size is 8.5″ x 11″ or less with an interior page count of fewer than 320 pages, then a good option for the end sheets is 140 gsm / 95 lb offset paper.
  • If your book size is larger than 8.5″ x 11″, then 180 gsm / 122 lb offset paper would be better.

Dust Jacket

The dust jacket is the most common and practical cover for hardcover books. It can be used by itself as a removable cover, or placed over a hardcover that already has a printed image wrap, combining both for added protection and style.

It provides a total of ten printable surfaces—five on the outside and five on the inside. The two folded-in sections on each side are called flaps.
