Black Core Paper
Black core paper is a multi-layered cardstock with a solid black layer sandwiched between two white printing surfaces. If you look at the edge of a card made from black core paper, you can see the dark center clearly. This construction serves a specific and critical purpose: the black layer blocks light from passing through the card, making it completely opaque.
Hold a standard white cardstock card up to a bright light and you may be able to see the artwork on the other side. Hold a black core card up to the same light and you see nothing. For card games, trading cards, and tarot decks, this opacity is essential. Players should never be able to identify the face of a card from its back.
Why Black Core Paper Matters
- Complete opacity: the black center layer prevents any light from passing through, ensuring face-down cards cannot be read.
- Professional feel: black core paper has a characteristic weight and rigidity that gives cards a satisfying, premium feel in the hand. Cards shuffle cleanly and snap crisply.
- Durability: the multi-layer construction resists bending, creasing, and edge wear better than single-ply cardstock.
- Industry standard: professional playing cards, casino decks, and tournament-grade game cards are produced on black core paper.
Black Core Paper vs. Premium Cardstock
| Property | Black Core (310 gsm) | Premium Cardstock (300–350 gsm) |
|---|---|---|
| Opacity | Fully opaque. No light passes through. | Semi-opaque. Content may be faintly visible under bright light. |
| Edge appearance | Black center visible on card edge. | White or light-colored edge. |
| Feel | Slightly softer. Professional card feel. | Firm, satisfying snap. Professional card feel. |
| Best for | Playing cards, game cards. | Trading cards, tarot, flash cards, educational cards, promotional cards. |
| Cost | Same as premium cardstock | Same as black core paper |
Not every card project requires black core paper. If opacity is not a concern (for example, educational flash cards, affirmation cards, or trading cards), premium cardstock at 300 to 350 gsm is a better option.
Common Applications
- Playing cards: poker decks, bridge cards, and custom playing card decks.
- Trading cards: collector cards, sports cards, and custom trading card sets where opacity prevents information bleed.
- Tarot and oracle cards: complete opacity is important for the integrity of readings.
- Game cards: any card-based game where players must not be able to identify face-down cards, including board game card components and standalone card games.
Available Weight
We offer black core paper in 310 gsm, which is the industry-standard weight for premium playing cards and card decks. This weight provides the optimal balance of rigidity, shuffle feel, and durability. Cards are typically laminated on both sides (gloss or matte) and can receive additional finishes such as spot UV, foil stamping, or embossing.
