Tri-Fold

Tri-Fold

What Is a Tri-Fold?

A tri-fold (also called a letter fold or C-fold) is one of the most widely used formats in commercial print marketing. A single sheet is divided into three equal panels and folded twice, creating a compact six-panel piece — three panels on each side — that fits neatly into a standard DL envelope or a shirt pocket.

The tri-fold is the default choice for brochures, mailers, and leaflets across virtually every industry. Its familiarity makes it immediately intuitive for the reader, and its compact folded size makes it practical and cost-effective to mail, distribute, and store.

How the Tri-Fold Works

A tri-fold divides the sheet into three equal-width panels. The two outer panels fold inward toward the center — one on top of the other — so that the finished piece is one third the size of the original sheet.

The six panels are typically arranged as follows:

  • Panel 1 — Outside front cover (the top panel when folded, facing the reader)
  • Panel 2 — Outside back cover (the bottom panel when folded, facing away)
  • Panel 3 — Outside middle panel (the back spine, visible when the piece is closed)
  • Panel 4 — Inside left panel (first visible when opened, the tucked-in flap)
  • Panel 5 — Inside center panel (the main inside panel)
  • Panel 6 — Inside right panel (connects to the front cover)

One important detail: the innermost panel (Panel 4) — the one that tucks inside the fold — needs to be very slightly narrower than the other two panels to allow it to fold cleanly without buckling. This is typically a reduction of around 1–2 mm, and our production team handles this adjustment automatically.

When fully opened, the tri-fold presents a wide three-panel spread on each side, which works well for sequential storytelling, step-by-step content, or a combination of cover, detail, and call-to-action panels.

Common Uses

The tri-fold is one of the most versatile formats in print, used across marketing, retail, hospitality, healthcare, and more:

  • Brochures and marketing collateral — the most common brochure format for company introductions, product overviews, and service guides
  • Direct mail campaigns — the folded size fits a standard DL envelope perfectly, making it a staple for postal marketing
  • Menus and hospitality materials — restaurant takeaway menus, spa service menus, and hotel information guides
  • Event and venue guides — conference programs, exhibition guides, and visitor information leaflets
  • Product catalogs and lookbooks — a compact format for showcasing a focused product range
  • Healthcare and nonprofit materials — patient information leaflets, charity fundraising inserts, and public awareness handouts
  • Packaging inserts — instruction sheets and product information folded to fit inside retail boxes
