Bi-Fold
What Is a Bi-Fold?
A bi-fold (also called a half-fold or single fold) is the simplest and most widely used paper fold in commercial printing. A single sheet is folded once down the middle, creating two panels on each side — four panels in total — that open and close like a book or a greeting card.
The result is a clean, compact piece that presents information across four clearly defined sections: an outside front cover, an outside back cover, and two inside panels that are revealed when the piece is opened. Despite its simplicity, the bi-fold format is extremely versatile and works across a wide range of printed products, from restaurant menus to premium brand brochures.
How the Bi-Fold Works
A bi-fold divides the sheet into two equal halves with a single fold running either vertically (portrait orientation) or horizontally (landscape orientation). When folded, the piece is exactly half the size of the original sheet.
The four panels are typically referred to as:
- Panel 1 — Outside front cover (right-hand panel when closed)
- Panel 2 — Inside left panel (first visible panel when opened)
- Panel 3 — Inside right panel (second visible panel when opened)
- Panel 4 — Outside back cover (left-hand panel when closed)
Panels 2 and 3 form a continuous spread when the piece is fully open, which makes the bi-fold ideal for designs that benefit from a wide, uninterrupted visual — such as a panoramic image, a large menu layout, or a product feature spread.
Bi-Fold vs. Other Fold Types
| Fold Type | Panels | Fold Direction | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bi-Fold / Half-Fold | 4 | Single inward | Menus, brochures, cards |
| Tri-Fold / Letter Fold | 6 | Nested inward | Mailers, pamphlets |
| Z-Fold | 6 | Alternating | Self-mailers, simple brochures |
| Accordion Fold | 4–8+ | Alternating | Maps, lookbooks, timelines |
| Gate Fold | 6 | Two outer panels fold inward | Premium product reveals |
| Roll Fold | 6+ | Rolling inward | Step-by-step instructions |
Common Uses
The bi-fold is one of the most common formats in print marketing and publishing. Typical applications include:
- Menus — restaurant, café, and event menus that open flat for easy reading
- Brochures and brand collateral — company introductions, product overviews, and service guides
- Event programs — concert, wedding, and conference programs
- Greeting cards and invitations — printed on heavier stock for a premium feel
- Lookbooks and mini catalogs — two-page spreads that showcase a product range
- Presentation folders — single-fold inserts used inside branded folders
- Flyers and mailers — folded A4 or letter-size sheets for direct mail campaigns
