Special Paper Options
Special paper is a broad category that covers any paper with properties beyond standard coated, uncoated, or C1S stocks. In addition to the holographic paper, textured paper, colored paper, vellum paper, metallic cardstock, black core paper, and soft-touch cardstock covered elsewhere in our paper options, we also offer bamboo and wood mixed fiber paper, semi-coated paper, pearlescent sheens, embossed patterns, unusual colors, decorative coatings, and many more special papers. At QinPrinting, we do not rely on a limited warehouse stock. We source special papers specifically for each client’s project, which gives us access to well over 100 different options.
If you have a specific look or feel in mind for your project, chances are there is a special paper that can achieve it. This page introduces the most popular categories. For the full range, contact us and we will provide samples and recommendations tailored to your design.
Popular Special Paper Types
Pearlescent paper: Paper with a subtle, shimmering surface that shifts between soft tones as it catches light. Less intense than metallic or holographic stocks, pearlescent paper adds an elegant, understated glow. Commonly used for wedding invitations, luxury packaging, and premium end sheets.
Parchment paper: Paper with an aged, antique appearance and a slightly translucent quality. Used for certificates, diplomas, period-style book covers, and themed packaging.
Glitter paper: Paper with fine glitter particles embedded in or coated onto the surface, creating a sparkling effect. Popular for gift packaging, greeting cards, and children’s products.
Recycled paper: Paper made from post-consumer or post-industrial recycled fibers, available in a range of textures and colors. Recycled stocks often have a natural, slightly uneven surface that adds character and communicates environmental responsibility. Popular for eco-conscious brands, sustainable packaging, and products where a natural, earthy aesthetic is part of the design story.
Common Applications
- Book covers and dust jackets: special paper wrapped on grayboard or used as a printed cover adds a premium, distinctive look that standard coated paper cannot achieve.
- Hardcover end sheets: a pearlescent or colored specialty end sheet creates a memorable impression the moment the reader opens the book.
- Rigid box wrapping: gold, silver, or textured special paper elevates retail packaging and gift boxes.
- Board game components: special paper can be used for game board wrapping, card backs, or decorative box elements.
- Art prints, greeting cards, and stationery: special papers are a natural fit for products where the material itself is a core part of the design.
Printing and Finishing
Most special papers can be printed using UV offset or screen printing methods. Standard offset printing is suitable for white or light-colored specialty stocks, while darker or metallic stocks require UV printing with a white ink underbase for accurate color. Foil stamping, embossing, debossing, and spot UV all work well on most special papers, though we recommend testing on a sample first if you are combining multiple techniques.
Because special papers vary widely in surface properties, we always recommend requesting a printed sample before committing to a full production run. What works beautifully on one specialty stock may behave differently on another.
How to Choose
With over 100 options, the selection can feel overwhelming. The fastest way to narrow your choices is to tell us three things: what product you are making (book, box, card deck, etc.), what visual effect you want (metallic, pearlescent, textured, colored, etc.), and your target budget. Our team will provide a shortlist of suitable papers with physical samples so you can see and feel each option before deciding.
