French Fold

French Fold

What Is a French Fold?

A French fold (also known as a quarter fold) is a folding technique where a sheet is folded in half in one direction and then folded in half again in the other direction, creating a compact piece that is one quarter the size of the original sheet. The result has four outer panels and four inner panels — eight panels in total.

French Fold vs. Other Fold Types

Fold Type Panels Best For
French Fold / Quarter Fold 8 (4 outer + 4 inner) Greeting cards, art prints, luxury brochures
Bi-Fold / Half Fold 4 Menus, brochures, simple mailers
Tri-Fold / Letter Fold 6 Mailers, pamphlets
Accordion Fold 4–8+ Maps, lookbooks, timelines
Gate Fold 6 Premium product reveals

Common Uses

The French fold is most commonly used where a premium, tactile feel is needed:

  • Greeting cards and invitations — the double-layer thickness gives cards a substantial, high-quality feel in the hand, popular for wedding invitations, holiday cards, and corporate greeting cards
  • Art prints and fine art editions — artists and photographers use French fold packaging to present loose prints in a self-contained, elegant format without requiring a separate envelope
  • Luxury brochures and brand collateral — the hollow construction creates a notably thick, rigid piece that feels premium without requiring heavy paper stock
  • Event programs and menus — the compact quarter-size format is easy to hold and carry, making it practical for concerts, ceremonies, and dining
  • Promotional mailers — the sealed edges mean no additional envelope is needed for certain self-mailer formats
  • Lookbooks and mini catalogs — a compact, refined format for fashion, interiors, and product showcases
