Singer Sewn Binding

Singer Sewn binding is a bookbinding method in which a single line of thread is used to stitch through the full thickness of the book block and cover using an industrial straight-stitch sewing machine, commonly referred to as a “Singer” machine. The process begins with collating either folded signatures or individual sheets into a book block, aligning them with a cover (if applicable), and stitching a continuous line of cotton or polyester thread either through the center fold (for folded signatures). The stitching is completed in a single pass and creates a visible, exposed seam along the spine. No adhesives, staples, or additional fasteners are used in this binding technique.
Following stitching, the book block is trimmed on the top, bottom, and fore-edge to create clean edges and ensure that all interior pages are neatly aligned within the boundaries of the cover. Due to this trimming process, the innermost pages—especially in folded signatures—may be slightly narrower than those near the outer edges, as the depth of the fold causes incremental variation in page width.
Singer Sewn binding is best suited for booklets with a relatively low page count, typically not exceeding 64 pages, depending on paper weight and thickness.
Advantages of Singer Sewn Binding
Exposed Thread Aesthetic: The visible stitching along the spine provides a handcrafted, artistic appearance that suits modern and creative design styles.
No Adhesives or Staples: Only thread is used, making it a clean and minimalist binding method, often preferred for eco-conscious or artisan projects.
Flat-Laying Pages: Singer Sewn books naturally lie flat when opened, making them suitable for sketchbooks, journals, and any format that benefits from a flat spread.
Durable Construction: The thread stitching holds pages securely in place, even after repeated opening and closing.
Color Customization: The thread color can be matched or contrasted with the cover design to create a cohesive or striking visual effect.
