Board Book Printing

Board Book Printing

Board books are built for the toughest readers—babies and toddlers who chew, drop, and throw their books. At QinPrinting, we print custom board books for educational publishers, children’s book publishers, and self-publishing parents. We offer two formats: self-cover board books (cover and interior pages share the same 350 gsm C1S thick board, the most economical option) and hardcover board books (with a wrapped gray-board case for premium retail editions). Standard sizes 6×6, 7×7, 8×8 inches; page count flexible in multiples of 2 (most board books are 12 to 32 pages). Interactive features available: lift-the-flaps, wheels, die-cuts, pop-ups.

For US distribution, we offer CPC-ready printing with soy-based non-toxic inks and lead-free paper meeting CPSIA standards (third-party testing arranged separately). Save 30-40%, MOQ 100 copies.

Popular Board Book Styles

At QinPrinting, we offer a range of custom board book options to meet every need and budget. Here’s a closer look at the styles we can print for you:

Custom Self-Cover Board Books

With a self-cover board book, we use the same sturdy material for both the cover and the interior pages to create a seamless, unified appearance. You can choose either gloss or matte lamination throughout. We often apply round corners for added safety and a more approachable look. Because the cover and pages share the same material, self-cover board books are also one of the most economical options we offer—making them particularly attractive to authors seeking custom board books for self-publishing.
Custom Self-Cover Board Book
Custom Hardcover Board Book

Custom Hardcover Board Books

For a more durable and traditional feel, we recommend a custom hardcover board book. We assemble the interior pages just as we do for a self-cover board book, then attach a hardcover by printing your design on art paper, wrapping it around gray board, and mounting it to the interior. This sturdier cover provides added protection and makes an excellent choice for books that will be handled often—helping them stand up to long-term use.

Custom Lift-the-Flap Board Books

You can spark curiosity and delight with a lift-the-flap design. We add flaps to selected pages to hide images or text underneath, turning story time into an interactive experience for kids. If you’re designing the artwork yourself, be sure to align the top and hidden images so they match perfectly when the flap is lifted. This playful feature keeps children engaged and eager to discover what’s underneath.

Custom Movable Board Books

We can take hands-on exploration to the next level with a movable board book. Children slide pieces from one spot to another and watch the transition unfold as part of the story. This interactive feature encourages imagination, builds motor skills, and supports creative development—making reading time both educational and fun. These formats are a highlight of our interactive board book printing services.

Custom Feel-and-Touch Board Books

You can engage more than just visual curiosity with a feel-and-touch board book. By adding textured materials, we help you create an immersive, multi-sensory reading experience. Children learn by both seeing and feeling a variety of surfaces. We can supply common textures—like soft fabric or embossed patterns—or, if you have unique materials in mind, just send them to us and we’ll incorporate them into your design.

Child Safety Standards & Certifications

All materials used in our board book production — inks, adhesives, laminates, and paperboard — are child-safe by default. We use soy-based inks throughout. Board books are classified as children’s products in most markets, and we take that responsibility seriously.

Safety certifications are available on request. Please note that laboratory testing and certification fees are charged separately and are not included in the printing price.

CPC (Children's Product Certificate)

The QinPrinting Eco-Friendly Promise

At QinPrinting, we are very conscious of our responsibility to develop our industry in a sustainable way that respects the life of the planet and of future generations. For that reason, we use paper stock that’s sourced from FSC-certified sustainable forestry whenever possible. We can provide recycled paper material on request. We also use environmentally friendly soy inks—based on harmless, biodegradable vegetable products—rather than toxic resins and solvents. Getting your book printed in batches with an offset printer — rather than one at a time with a print-on-demand service — is also significantly more energy efficient, saving both water and electricity.
When you order from us, we can include the FSC-certified logo and an environmental guarantee from the manufacturer of the soy inks. We’re proud to offer eco-friendly board book printing options without compromising on quality or cost-efficiency.

Why Print Your Flash Cards with Us?

Flash card printing has specific requirements that general card printers don’t always optimize for. Here’s what makes us different:

Professional-Offset-Quality

350 gsm C1S Thick Board Construction

Board books need pages thick enough to survive babies and toddlers. We use 350 gsm C1S (Coated One Side) paper as our standard—each page is two sheets of 350 gsm paper mounted together, giving you the rigid, durable pages that make board books “board books”. For larger formats (8×8 or larger) or thicker books (40+ pages), we offer 210 gsm C1S to keep the book at a manageable weight while maintaining structural integrity.

Full-Customization,-Endless-Options

Self-Cover and Hardcover Formats

We offer both standard board book formats: self-cover board books use the same thick board for cover and interior pages (most common, most economical, 95% of the market), while hardcover board books add a gray-board case wrapped in printed paper for premium retail or gift editions (typically 25-35% more per copy). Self-cover is ideal for self-publishing parents and educational publishers; hardcover for premium retail brands and gift editions.

CPC Safety Certification for Kids' Books

Child Safety and CPC Compliance Coordination

Board books for the US retail market must comply with CPSIA and need a CPC (Children’s Product Certificate). We coordinate third-party safety testing through partner labs on your behalf (testing fee paid separately by you). The printing itself uses soy-based non-toxic inks and lead-free paper as standard. CE and EN71 supported for European retail.

Interactive Features for Engaging Babies and Toddlers

Board books often include interactive elements that make them especially engaging for young children: lift-the-flaps, rotating wheels, slider tabs, die-cut shapes (animal silhouettes, letters), pop-up pages, touch-and-feel textured insertions. We produce all these in-house. For complex movable book projects, →

Factory-Direct Pricing for Print Runs from 100 to 100,000+

We print in our own facility in China with direct access to all board book materials—350 gsm C1S paper, gray board, lamination film, soy-based inks. Our clients typically save 30-40% on board book production versus US printers. For self-publishing parents running 500-copy launches, educational publishers ordering 5,000+ copies, or retail brands placing 25,000+ unit orders, the savings add up to thousands of dollars per title.

FAQs

The minimum order quantity is 100 copies.
The standard production time is approximately 2–3 weeks, depending on order amount, size and finishing options. Shipping times vary based on your location and shipping method.

Both are valid board book formats, but they look and cost differently:

  • Self-cover board book: the cover and interior pages use the same 350 gsm C1S thick board. The cover is the front face of the first interior page (printed on both sides). This is the most common format—about 95% of board books are self-cover. More economical, faster production, suitable for most projects.
  • Hardcover board book: includes an additional gray-board case wrapped in printed paper, glued to the interior pages via end sheets (similar to a regular hardcover book). The cover overhangs the interior pages by a small margin. Costs roughly 25-40% more per copy and takes longer to produce. Best for premium retail editions, gift books, and limited collector editions.

For most publishers and self-publishing parents, self-cover is the right choice. Choose hardcover only when you need the premium retail feel.

A: Board books can be printed in any even number of pages (multiples of 2), because each sheet creates two pages when folded and bound. There’s no requirement for multiples of 12 or any specific increment—you have full flexibility.

Common page counts (based on what most publishers choose):

  • 12 pages — simplest format, lowest cost, popular for first-word books and very young infants (0-18 months)
  • 20-24 pages — most common for storybook-style content (18 months-3 years)
  • 32 pages — longer storytelling, more developed narratives

Maximum page count: standard 6×6 to 8×8 board books cap at about 64 pages on 350 gsm paper, or 80 pages on lighter 210 gsm paper for larger formats. Beyond that the book becomes too thick to function as a board book.

If you have a specific page count in mind (say 18 pages, 26 pages, anything even), just tell us at quote time—we can produce it.

The ideal size for children’s board books is 6″ x 6″. But we can customize the dimensions according to your needs and the target age-group of your book.

The primary material for board books is white C1S paper (Coated One Side). We bond two sheets of C1S paper together on the uncoated sides, so that we can print on the coated sides, which are usually also laminated to protect them from wear and tear.
For self-cover board books and hardcover board book interiors, we use the following papers:

  • 350 gsm C1S paper
  • 300 gsm C1S paper
  • 250 gsm C1S paper

Hardcover board books feature a case-bound exterior. We make the cover from 157 gsm art paper, laminated, and then wrapped around 2 mm, 2.5 mm, or 3 mm thick gray board.

Yes, we coordinate CPC compliance for board books sold in the US, but it’s important to understand the cost structure upfront:

What’s included in our printing service:

  • Soy-based non-toxic inks meeting CPSIA standards
  • Lead-free paper and safe adhesives
  • CPC-ready printing setup

Third-party lab testing (lead, phthalates, small parts) is billed separately—typically $450-800 per product. We arrange the testing with our partner labs and deliver the test report and CPC documentation to you.

Board books target ages 0-3, so they almost always require CPC for US retail under CPSIA. For CE certification (EU markets) and EN71 testing (European retail), the same separate-fee structure applies. Tell us your distribution channels at quote time.
