Finish Options

Hardcover books rely on finishing details to create a premium, retail-ready feel. From foil-stamped titles on coffee table books to gilded edges on collector novels and cloth covers on photography portfolios, we offer a full range of finishing options:

Hardcover Book Paper Options

Choosing the right paper is essential to balance visual impact, durability, and interactivity:

  • Gloss Art Paper: Bright finish that enhances color depth—great for illustration-heavy books.
  • Matte Art Paper: Subtle sheen with excellent print quality and comfortable reading.
  • Uncoated Paper: Best for coloring, writing, and interactive formats; prevents bleed-through.

For a detailed guide to all available paper options, see our paper options page.

Landscape Hardcover Book Format

Landscape-format hardcover books are ideal for wide images and panoramic layouts. They’re often used for photography books, architecture portfolios, and visual reports. We use Smyth-sewn binding, so the pages lie flat when open—without gutter loss or distortion.

There’s no added charge for landscape formats, and we handle large and short runs with equal care.

Portrait Hardcover Books Printing

Portrait Hardcover Book Format

Portrait orientation is the most common format for hardcover printing. It’s suitable for fiction and nonfiction, academic titles, catalogs, and more. Page counts range from 32 to 800, depending on paper weight.

All books are Smyth-sewn by default, giving them a professional finish and long shelf life.

Hardcover Books with Dust Jackets

Dust jackets add extra protection and a polished look. They include five printable areas: front cover, back cover, spine, and two inside flaps. Finish options include gloss or matte coating, foil stamping, embossing, debossing, and lamination.

This format is especially common in publishing and retail.

For a detailed guide on dust jackets, see our dust jacket resource page.

Custom Comic Book with Slipcase

Slipcases for Hardcover Books

Slipcases are custom-made boxes that hold one or more books. They’re built from rigid board and covered in printed paper or fabric, with one open side that reveals the spine. Slipcases protect the book while adding weight and presence—often used for box sets, special editions, or presentation copies.

We can match the case material to the book cover for a consistent look.

How We Bind Hardcover Books

Every hardcover we produce uses Smyth-sewn binding — the strongest and most professional method available. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Printing & Folding Interior pages are printed on large sheets and folded into sections called signatures — typically 8, 16, or 32 pages per signature.
  2. Sewing Each signature is sewn together through the fold with strong thread, then all signatures are assembled into a complete book block. This is what makes Smyth-sewn binding superior to glued methods — the thread keeps pages permanently secure.
  3. Gluing & Trimming The sewn book block is glued at the spine and reinforced with gauze (super cloth) for extra strength. The block is then trimmed to the final size on three sides.
  4. Casing In The book block is glued into a rigid cover made of 2.5mm greyboard wrapped in your choice of printed paper, cloth, or faux leather. Endsheets connect the block to the case, completing the binding.

The result is a book that opens flat, never cracks at the spine, and lasts for decades.

Why Choose QinPrinting for Hardcover Books?

Smyth-Sewn Binding as Standard

Every hardcover we produce uses Smyth-sewn binding — signatures are folded, sewn, and cased in. The result is a book that opens flat, holds up to heavy use, and lasts for decades. We don’t offer inferior glued-in hardcover binding.

Free Manual File Checking Service

A single file error can send your entire print run to the bin. Wrong color mode. Missing bleed. Low-resolution images that look fine on screen but blur in print. By the time you notice, it’s too late — and expensive.

That’s why every order at QinPrinting includes a free manual file check by our prepress team. Not automated software. Real eyes on your files, before anything touches the press. We catch what machines miss.

If something’s wrong, we’ll tell you exactly what it is and how to fix it. Your files are in safe hands — and it costs you nothing.

Gilded Edges and Painted Edges

For hardcover books, the edges of the text block can be finished with additional decorative treatments.

  • Gilded edges are created by applying a thin layer of metallic foil—typically gold or silver, though other metallic colors are also available—giving the book a luxurious, polished look.
  • Painted edges are achieved by applying ink directly to the edges. This can be done in solid colors, in gradients, or even with pre-designed patterns or images.

Pricing shown applies to gilded edges in gold or silver, as well as all painted edge options. For other metallic foil colors, please contact us for a custom quote.

  • If your book size is larger than 8.5″ x 11″, then 180 gsm / 122 lb offset paper would be better.

Dust Jacket

The dust jacket is the most common and practical cover for hardcover books. It can be used by itself as a removable cover, or placed over a hardcover that already has a printed image wrap, combining both for added protection and style.

It provides a total of ten printable surfaces—five on the outside and five on the inside. The two folded-in sections on each side are called flaps.
