What Is a Puzzle Book?

A puzzle book is a printed book filled with brain games and challenges—such as Sudoku and number puzzles, word searches and crosswords, mazes, spot-the-difference, connect-the-dots, riddles, and logic grids. Many puzzle books also include answer-key pages at the back.
Puzzle books are popular for travel and airport retail, classroom workbooks, kids’ entertainment, senior brain-training, corporate gifts, and subscription boxes. Your book can focus on one puzzle type (like a full Sudoku series) or combine multiple styles in a single volume.

We can customize nearly every aspect of your puzzle book. Here are the most common options

Feature Options
Trim size 6"×9", 5.5" x 8.5", US Letter 8.5" x 11", or custom
Interior paper 80–100 gsm uncoated (best for writing with pencil or pen)
Cover stock 250–300 gsm coated paper
Printing Black & white or full color
Binding Saddle stitch, sewn and perfect binding, spiral, or wire-O
Pages 16–300+ pages depending on binding
Bleed & margins 3 mm (0.125") bleed; 8–12 mm safe zone
Finish Matte, gloss, or soft-touch lamination for covers
Special options Perforated pages, page numbering, shrink-wrap, sets, slipcases
File format Print-ready PDF, CMYK or grayscale, 300 dpi, fonts embedded

Unlike generic printers, we use premium 80–100 gsm uncoated offset paper. This ensures pencils glide smoothly, ink doesn’t smudge, and erasers work cleanly—crucial for a frustration-free puzzle experience.

The cost to print puzzle books usually ranges from about $0.50 to $5.00 per copy, depending on size, page count, binding style, and quantity.

Add-Ons and Upgrades for Puzzle Books

Avoid these issues for a smoother printing process and better user experience:

Mistake Result How to Avoid
Using coated paper inside Ink smudging and poor pencil grip Choose uncoated interior paper
No bleed set on full-page art White lines at the trim edge Add 3 mm (0.125") bleed on all outer edges
Fonts too small Hard to read, especially for seniors Use larger font sizes for numbers and clues
Low-resolution puzzle grids Fuzzy lines and numbers Use vector artwork where possible, or export raster artwork at 300 dpi or higher
Tight inner margins Puzzles disappear into the gutter Keep at least 8 mm of safe zone away from the binding edge
Overly dark gray backgrounds Reduced contrast for numbers and letters Use light tints; keep text and numbers high contrast

If you’re unsure about your file setup, you can send us your PDFs and we’ll check them before production.

  • Painted edges are created by applying ink directly to the edges. These can be produced in solid colors, gradient tones, or with printed patterns and custom designs.

Endsheet Paper

  • If your book size is 8.5″ x 11″ or less with an interior page count of fewer than 320 pages, then a good option for the end sheets is 140 gsm / 95 lb offset paper.
  • If your book size is larger than 8.5″ x 11″, then 180 gsm / 122 lb offset paper would be better.

Dust Jacket

The dust jacket is the most common and practical cover for hardcover books. It can be used by itself as a removable cover, or placed over a hardcover that already has a printed image wrap, combining both for added protection and style.

It provides a total of ten printable surfaces—five on the outside and five on the inside. The two folded-in sections on each side are called flaps.
