Neck Shoulder Rigid Box vs. Telescope Rigid Box: What's the Difference?
At first glance, these two boxes look similar—they are both sturdy, two-piece rigid boxes. However, the difference lies in the construction and the unboxing experience.
Here is a breakdown to help you choose the right structure for your brand.
- Telescope Rigid Box (Top & Bottom Box)
- The Structure: The lid fits over the base. In terms of height, the lid can be the same depth as the base (Full Telescope) or shorter (Partial Telescope), covering the base either fully or partially. The friction between the inner walls of the lid and the outer walls of the base keeps the box closed.
- The Look: When closed, you can see (or feel) the “overbite” where the lid overlaps the base. The sides are not flush.
- Best For: Standard retail packaging, puzzles, board games, and cost-effective gift boxes.
- Shoulder Neck Rigid Box (3-Piece Box)
- The Structure: This is a 3-piece construction: Lid + Base + Inner Neck (Tray). The inner neck is glued inside the base and extends upward. The lid slides over the neck and rests directly on the top rim of the base, completely concealing the neck when closed.
- The Look: Because the lid and base do not overlap, they can be made to the exact same outer dimensions. This creates a perfectly flush, seamless surface from top to bottom.
- The “Reveal”: You can choose to leave a gap between the lid and base to expose the neck color (e.g., a black box with a gold neck), creating a stunning visual contrast.
- Best For: High-end jewelry, perfumes, luxury cosmetics, and premium gift sets where the “unboxing experience” is critical.
